Speech and language therapy placements

The speech and language therapy placement handbook contains guidance and current legislation on students in speech and language therapy placements from the perspective of students and the educators. This is to facilitate the smooth running of the placement experience for everyone involved.

  • Information for students

As a student studying to be a speech and language therapist, you will spend part of your time at Essex out on placement working in practice with one of our partner organisations. This is your opportunity to experience life as a speech and language therapist working with service users and colleagues from numerous professions and backgrounds.

Your time in placement forms the foundations of not only your degree but also your future career as a speech and language therapist. Many opportunities will arise during this time that will enable you to put your skills and knowledge into practice in real-time, often fast-paced environments challenging you professionally and personally. The experiences you have and the impression you make during placements can directly link to your future employability and career pathway – so make the most of every opportunity you can!

    Access to the placement database

The Practice Education Management System (PEMS) placement database enables you to view and update the practice education elements of your programme. Log-in details were provided at the start of your course.

  • Information for practice educators

Thank you for agreeing to be an educator on our speech and language therapy programme. When our students enter practice we endeavour to ensure they are not only fit for practice, but are professional and approachable at all times. We also ask that our students consistently demonstrate both the University values and those of the NHS.

Online update for mentors, clinical educators and practice educators

Your role as a mentor is essential in developing new generations of health professionals. We have developed an inter-professional update for clinicians who educate students within practice. This includes mentors, clinical educators and practice educators from professions such as nursing, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy.

The aim of the inter-professional online update is to provide an opportunity for you to reflect on, and if necessary, make changes to your current practice as an educator, and to benefit from the experiences of educators across multiple professions.

Clinical and practice educator training workshops

Throughout the year we offer a range of specialist courses and workshops for new and experienced educators. These workshops can cover subjects such as sharing best practice, current regulations, student and graduate perspectives, continuing professional development and research opportunities.
