We have a number of facilities at our Southend Campus you can benefit from whilst training for your career in oral health, including:

  • purpose-built facilities for our oral health courses
  • the Forum (a brand new state-of-the-art library and learning facilities)
  • accommodation
  • Students' Union
  • sports facilities

Our courses

We offer a range of courses applicable for hygienists and therapists both in the UK and internationally. Our Foundation degree is ideal if you would like to register as a hygienist with the GDC, or if you are looking for a cost-effective way of training your staff to the level of hygienist.

The BSc Oral Health Science builds on the Foundation degree and provides the additional skills required to be a therapist with an active part in clinic. Alternatively, if you have already trained as a hygienist (in the UK or elsewhere) or are a therapist and want to brush up your skills or register with the GDC, we have the relevant modules available.

  • FdSc Oral Health Science (Hygiene)

Since 2007 we have offered our Foundation degree in Oral Health Science at our Southend Campus. This course not only prepares you for a career as a dental hygienist, but successful completion enables you to register as a dental hygienist with the GDC.

Are you based outside of the UK and want to train as a dental hygienist? We are now able to offer a limited number of places to international applicants. Full information is in the course details or alternatively contact the administrator hhsohlth@essex.ac.uk.

  • BSc Oral Health Science (Therapy)

Our BSc Oral Health Science prepares you for a career as a dental therapist and successful completion of the course enables you to register with the GDC as a dental therapist. Based on our two-year, full-time FdSc Oral Health Science, our unique BSc (Hons) Oral Health Science is also delivered at our state-of-the-art facilities in Southend and commences in January each year.

BSc Oral Health Science is a one-year programme open to existing registered dental hygienists wanting to develop their role within the dental team. If gives you the opportunity to study and develop professionally while being flexible enough for you to continue to work as a dental hygienist.

  • Dental hygienist adaptation module

HS745 Dental hygienist adaptation module (.pdf) is available to both international applicants and returning UK hygienists.

    International students

Have you already trained and qualified as a dental hygienist outside the UK, and undertaken the GDC Dental Care Professions assessment of your existing qualification? This adaptation module will help you achieve the GDC required learning outcomes for registration as a hygienist in the UK.

    Returning UK hygienists

Are you a UK hygienist returning to practice? This adaptation module is an ideal refresher course that can offer you required CPD hours for re-registration with the GDC.

    How to apply

  • Dental therapist reskill module

Do you want to revisit your dental therapist clinical skills and competencies? Many dental care professionals already possess a joint dental hygiene and dental therapy qualification, but a large proportion do not practise the skills of a dental therapist in their workplace. With the advent of the new NHS dental contract the skills of a dental therapist are becoming a valuable part of the new skills mix structure for the delivery of oral health care in the UK.

Our HS746 dental therapist reskill module (.pdf) is taught in our state-of-the-art dental laboratory. It allows you as an existing qualified dental therapist to consolidate your skills to a level of contemporary competence and underpin your knowledge so that it is consistent with that of a practising dental therapist.

    How to apply

  • MSc Periodontology and MSc Advanced Periodontal Practice
