More than two-thirds of our research was rated 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent' in
the REF 2014. Our pattern of appointments has deliberately brought
together scholars with a wide range of approaches and fields in early-modern, modern and contemporary history.
We offer programmes that reflect our strengths in social and cultural history, and have particular expertise in the following
geographical areas: Britain (including local and regional history), Europe, the United States, Russia, Brazil, Southern Africa,
China, and Britain's Asian empire.
A variety of scholarships and funding for postgraduate study is available.

Active research community
We have a large and committed postgraduate community that actively contributes to our research profile. We provide excellent research training
and careful supervision based on excellent staff-student relationships.
We run a regular programme of seminars and conferences
that allow you to broaden your experience beyond your study and to contribute to ongoing debates in our Department. Our students also organise our
annual postgraduate and early career historians conference which attracts speakers from
across the UK and abroad and provides opportunities for you to present your research.

- The Albert Sloman Library has excellent collections in British and European modern history, and its holdings in the areas of
Latin America, Russia and the US are of national importance.
- The Library's Special Collection has a number of collections of interest to historical research, including the libraries of the Essex
Society for Archaeology and History, and of the Royal Historical Society.
- The History Data Service is based in the UK Data Archive at our Colchester Campus.
