Learn languages

All our students can learn languages in a number of ways, including as part of your degree, in evening classes or online at no extra cost, or via Essex Modern Language Certificates.

Internships provide you with an opportunity to engage directly with contemporary human rights issues, and to develop a more advanced understanding of human rights work, as well as specific human rights issues and situations.

The Human Rights Centre has longstanding experience working with a diverse range of organisations around the globe, and provides advice and contacts to help you plan the next stage of your career. Recent students have secured a diverse range of internships, including work in:

  • national and international NGOs
  • the United Nations
  • regional courts such as the Inter-American Court of Human Rights
  • governmental organisations such as NATO

These opportunities have taken students to places such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Belgium, the United States, France, Kenya and the Gaza Strip.

Essex Human Rights Alumni Association

The Essex Human Rights Alumni Association is a network of Human Rights Centre graduates dedicated to facilitating cooperation and the sharing of expertise amongst graduates. This is an invaluable resource as you embark upon a career as a human rights professional.

The Alumni Association has also established a mentoring scheme to promote the sharing of experience, ideas and knowledge on human rights issues between alumni currently engaged in human rights work and students currently studying at the Human Rights Centre, and operates a noticeboard advertising upcoming jobs and internships.
