Master interpreting

student in interpreting lab

Our new interpreting training lab gives you the tools to become an expert in conference interpreting. We also have a lab to interpret lectures of up to 350 people. These are the only labs of their kind in East Anglia.

We are one of the largest and most prestigious departments for English language and linguistics research in the UK. We are also the only UK universities to offer the study of interpreting, translation and subtitling in a joint course.

We're a home for those who want to delve deeper, scrutinising and rigorously testing the accepted thinking in language and linguistics. We expect you to debate and engage with our research community, contributing to knowledge in the discipline.

Why Essex?

World-leading research

We are:

  • ranked among the top 200 departments on the planet according to the QS World University Rankings (2017)
  • 9th in the UK for research quality (REF 2014), with over three-quarters of our research rated 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'

Our research feeds directly into what we teach you in the classrom to ensure you have the best learning experience.

Thriving postgraduate community

Join fellow Masters and research students to practice your presentation skills at our postgraduate conferences:

We publish an annual collection of papers written by our graduate students: Essex Graduate Student Papers in Language and Linguistics. This gives you experience in preparing a paper for publishing.

Masters courses

We offer:

  • a range of Masters in English language and linguistics, English language teaching and translation, interpreting and subtitling.
  • small class sizes
  • intensive teaching
  • great facilities
"My course at Essex was the perfect preparation and launchpad for my career. The first-rate facilities and teaching made for a great learning experience. I also had great fun working with fellow students from all over the world on a wide-array of translation, interpreting and subtitling projects."
Max Green, MA Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling

PhD courses

If you want your supervisor to lead you by hand, then our postgraduate research courses aren't for you. You work with your supervisor, not for them. We want students with purpose - those who want to use their postgraduate research to push themselves but also make a contribution to the research environment and society.

One Masters not enough?
