you're excited about joining us! This page gives you some essential
information about starting your course at Essex, plus details of how to find
other information to help you.

During Welcome Week you must complete
so that you can start your course.
Study and contact hours per week
During term time you will have 12 hours of timetabled events each week
(lectures, classes and tutorials). A useful guideline is that you should
expect to do two hours of personal study for every hour of contact time. You
should also allow time for study out of term time.
Postgraduates Only - Part-time option
Our MA and LLM courses are offered on a full and part-time basis. This
means you can do the course over 24months/ 2 years. You would be expected to
attend 6 hours of timetabled events each week. Part-time students should note that teaching
takes place on weekdays, during working hours.
Your student handbook will have information about your module assessment,
however generally it's normally a combination of coursework or exams. Lots
of useful information is also available via
Your personal timetable is available from early September, you can find
out more by visiting the
student timetable page.
Choosing your optional modules
You can access
eNROL to see if you have any modules you need to choose.
The Module Directory is a good place to find out
more about the modules that you might be considering. You should be aware
that for some modules in other departments there is a limit to the number of
students who can take the module. Therefore, it is a good idea to start
looking at which modules might interest you now.
When choosing your modules it's also important that you have a balanced workload
across the two terms (for example 4 modules in each term).
There are several people in our School who can help you if you have a
question - the course director, module coordinator, the lecturers or your
assigned personal tutor (whom you will meet during Welcome week). If you
aren't sure who to speak to about a particular issue please feel free to
visit the Law general office and speak to one of our
administrators who will be happy to point you in the right direction.
To discover more about our academic staff who will be part of your Essex
experience, you can visit our

If you feel like you need a bit more support, please come and speak to
one of our administrators during our opening hours.

Finding your way around
The University of Essex campus at Colchester is quite compact, so it doesn't
take long to move between lectures, classes, the library and other facilities.
Feel free to familiarise yourself with any teaching rooms you may have during
welcome week as we all know the room numbering system can be quite confusing at
times! The University has created an online map called 'Find your way' which is also available to download as an
app for iPhone/iPad and Android.
