Our University offers a variety of opportunities to gain experience through internships and work placements during your studies.

Learning from work: business challenge module

As a second- or final-year student, you have the opportunity to work on a real business challenge linked with a 15-credit employability module, SK701 Learning from work. The module runs in the spring term with a weekly eight-hour work experience component that you can schedule around your studies.

You are teamed up with a student from another department, allowing you to combine your skills, knowledge and experience and provide each other with support. Weekly workshops help you learn about career theory, share experiences with students working on other challenges, and get support from your tutor.

Examples of recent business challenges include:

  • promoting the Essex Book Festival via social media and researching sustainable business models;
  • designing an event to attract a big audience for a local media company;
  • making short YouTube films for a medical education company;
  • identifying new business opportunities for a performance arts and events company; and
  • researching and writing Wikipedia pages for a local public art festival.

The business challenge module is an excellent way to enhance your employability and prepare for the recruitment process. You gain valuable experience in problem solving and teamwork as well as developing commercial awareness that will help you stand out in a competitive job market. You also have the opportunity to network with a range of local employers and gain insight into their business needs.

We also have a number of other employability skills modules available.
