Student operating a film camera

Our film studies students run and work on individual film projects. To showcase their work, we set up a Vimeo channel. Have a look at what they have produced and get some ideas for future projects of your own.

Film studies at Essex combines the critical study of the history and theory of cinema with practical film production. You explore film across genres, time periods, and regions, from Hollywood, world and independent cinema, to documentaries and television. Simultaneously you gain hands-on experience in camerawork, editing, lighting, screenwriting, and production management - essential for careers in the film and television industry.

Our BA courses allow you to concentrate on the theory and practice of film studies as a single discipline, as well as combine your interests in film with literature, creative writing, history, American studies, or art history.

At postgraduate level, our MA courses offer an intensive and in-depth focus on film reception and practice, allowing you to enhance your critical abilities while developing your expertise and creativity behind the camera. We welcome applications for PhD study in film studies either by the submission of a thesis or as a creative practice doctorate based on the production of a screenplay or film with critical commentary.
