Our Department

Our Department was one of the first to be established when our University opened in 1964. Professor John Dowden was the first student of the University. We are a small and friendly department, and we take great pride in our excellent staff-student relations.

Our teaching

We teach undergraduate modules in applied mathematics, pure mathematics, statistics and operational research, as well as specialist modules for the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering.

At postgraduate level, we have a long history of providing taught courses and supervising projects for advanced research degrees.

Maths Support Centre

In liaison with the University's Talent Development Centre, we run the Essex Maths Support Centre. The Maths Support Centre is open to all students, staff and members of the community, offering people help with maths problems they're having at any level. It's staffed by students from our Department who receive training to work as advisers. Working in our Centre will give you key transferable skills to boost your CV.
