Campus visits

students touring the campus

A pre-16 school group during a campus visit.

Campus visits aren’t your average campus experience. Our aim is to give your students a first-hand experience of what it’s like to be an undergraduate student.

We have tailored programmes for both pre-16 school groups, and post-16 sixth form and college students.

Our campus visit days are large scale events on selected dates throughout the academic year. We invite schools to book up to 40 students per school and can accommodate five schools per date.

2017 campus visit dates

  • Wednesday 27 September, Colchester Campus. The closing date for applications is 9 June.
  • Friday 30 June, Southend Campus, 20 spaces available. The closing date to apply for a campus visit is 24 March.
  • Thursday 28 September, Colchester Campus. The closing date for applications is 9 June.

Open to sixth forms and colleges only (year 12). The closing date to apply for a campus visit is 24 March.

  • Monday 26 June, Colchester Campus.
  • Tuesday 27 June, Colchester Campus.
  • Thursday 29 June, Southend Campus.

Typical itinerary

Our programme will run from 9.45am - 2.30pm.

An introductory presentation tailored to match the stage students are at, from initial thoughts about 'Why go to university' to understanding about the ins and outs of 'student life'. This session also incorporates our 'student panel' giving your students the opportunity to ask our specially trained student ambassadors about their own experiences of studying at university level.

Campus and accommodation tours; current students will take groups around the University for a guided tour. Students are given the opportunity to look around the campus, see inside our fantastic facilities and experience our student accommodation (if available).

Pre-16 taster sessions

For year groups 7-11 your students will have the opportunity to experience a subject taster with our PhD students from academic departments across Essex. Taster sessions will vary depending on availability but will range from sessions in marine biology, banking and finance, criminology or psychology.

Post 16 skills sessions

For sixth form and college groups we have designed skills sessions designed to develop your students' awareness of the key skills that underpin independent learning ready for university. Skills sessions will vary depending on availability but may include:

  • revision and exam techniques
  • how to skim read and take notes effectively
  • study skills and learning styles
  • how to reference

Students will be allocated a 30 minute lunch break to maximise our time spent delivering a great programme of activities. Due to the size of the events, we ask that all students bring a packed lunch with them.
