Your career options
We have lots of careers events and workshops running this term, all designed to
help you develop skills, research future career options and meet employers. Some are one-off annual events, so don't miss out.
Studying psychology gives you a broad range of transferable skills that employers value, in addition to your training
in psychology itself. You will leave us with:
- clear and accurate writing and proficient oral presentation skills
- critical thinking
- the ability to assimilate and evaluate complex information
- numerical competency and thorough training in research methods and statistics
- formal report writing.
Many of our courses are accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS),
giving you a pathway to membership after your time spent studying with us. Accreditation is a mark of the quality of
our courses which will be recognised by future employers.
Your career options
Our BPS accreditation helps many of our graduates to pursue careers as clinical, forensic, educational or occupational
psychologists. Others work in related fields such as social work or mental health care.
The training we provide in transferable skills also means that our graduates have gone on to work in a wide variety of
other fields such as management, personnel, financial services, the media, information technology and market research.
Our courses also provide an excellent platform for postgraduate study. Recent graduates have gone on to complete Masters or
PhD programmes in forensic psychology, cognitive neuropsychology, research methods and relationship therapy.
As part of completing a degree with us, you will take modules devoted to career development, designed to boost your career
prospects. The modules provide you with opportunities to:
- reflect and decide upon career aspirations
- help you identify the steps required to reach those goals
- introduce you to opportunities and resources that help to complete these steps.
Each year you will take an employability and careers module tailored to your stage of career development. These modules are run jointly by
the Psychology department and the Employability and Careers Centre.
These comprise lectures, workshops and assessments designed to enhance your CV, application and cover letter techniques, and develop your career
pursuit in a supportive, low-intensity approach.
Within our Department we offer a Research Experience Scheme, which gives you
the opportunity to volunteer on a research project. You will help an academic member of staff with their research, learning
essential research skills such as experiment design and transferable skills such as project management.
Our University offers a wide variety of ways in which you can gain further experience to enhance your CV and throughout
your time with us you will be supported by our Employability and Careers Centre.
frontrunners is our original placement scheme that offers students paid work opportunities on campus. You'll get on-placement training and great experience to add to your CV.
Internships are an excellent way to earn money and develop a stand-out CV. Register with us for
information on paid internship opportunities with local, national and even international employers.
