Why contact Essex graduates

We know how important Essex alumni can be to the University. Our graduates play a vital role in supporting our current students, and recruiting new ones, in many ways, including mentoring, offering placements, wider support with employability, visiting lectures and talks, as well as sitting on committees and advising us on course developments. So we understand why you may want to get in touch with them.

The Alumni Relations team can help

There are over 125,000 Essex graduates across the world, and the Alumni Relations team maintain a relationship with this global network of alumni.

Keeping our alumni data safe

The Advancement team, which includes Alumni Relations, have responsibility for maintaining an alumni community who are ambassadors for the University. They manage the ever-growing alumni database, update individual communication preferences, and keep alumni informed over their lifetimes. As a University, we must make sure we’re adhering to the UK General Data Protection Regulations (UK GDPR), so it is important that we don’t contact a graduate who has asked not to receive communication from the University. This can often happen when colleagues source contact details from out-of-date sources such as ESIS or locally-held spreadsheets, which is why we ask that anyone wishing to contact alumni consults with us first.

How we can support you

While it may seem complicated to contact the alumni team instead of going directly to the graduate, the team are here to support you and hopefully make your task much easier. They can support you with:

  • providing demographics of alumni by department
  • liaising directly with alumni - arranging alumni volunteers, sending tailored communications and providing stat reports afterwards, sending event invitations, promoting events and managing alumni responses
  • providing tours or goodie bags for alumni returning to campus or volunteering to steward them for volunteering their time
  • recording alumni engagement for reporting purposes including how many are volunteering or engaging with Essex
  • managing and storing alumni data on behalf of the university to ensure adherence to UK GDPR and other legislation
