Leaving a gift in your will

Remembering Essex in your will is a straightforward process. Any gift simply needs to be included in your will or attached to an existing will as a codicil. You can leave money or assets like books, property, shares or works of art to the University – or even a proportion of your estate.

The University is an exempt charity, which means leaving us a gift in your will is entirely free of tax, including Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax. Also, if you decide to leave more than 10% of your estate to charity, there will be less tax to pay on any non-charitable bequests.

To let us guide you through this process, please email thankyou@essex.ac.uk.

Donating from overseas

US-based donors

The University of Essex is a member of the British Schools and Universities Foundation (BSUF), a non-profit educational, scientific and literary foundation supporting school and university fundraising in the British Commonwealth through tax-effective giving in the US.

It is a non-profit, tax-exempt foundation managed by volunteers. Contributions are deductible for Federal income tax purposes. Bequests, legacies, devises, transfers, or gifts are deductible for Federal estate and gift tax purposes. Find out more, and donate to Essex at the BSUF website.

Hong Kong-based donors

Donate via our partner, Hong Kong Foundation for Charities.

Through payroll (Essex staff)

You can sign-up or amend a donation from your monthly pay via the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). The donation comes out pre-tax, so is a really efficient way for you to donate.
