Sustainable Transitions - Governance, Ecological Management and Society - Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme 2024-25

This is an opportunity to conduct fully funded interdisciplinary research under the Sustainable Transitions Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme at the University of Essex.

Each research project will be interdisciplinary in nature and supervised by expert academics drawn from two (and in certain instances three) of the following five disciplines at the University - Business, Government, Law, Life Sciences and Sociology - to address specific challenges.

There are eight different projects that you can apply for under the programme:

• Managing the environmental impact of antifouling biocides in recreational marinas through stakeholder engagement
• How to enhance climate governance to achieve effective funding for ‘loss and damage’ at the local level
• Climate misinformation
• Human rights in postgrowth proposals and policies
• Environmental loss, ecological grief and reparative action
• Sustainable transition to nature-based solutions for coastal defence
• The scourge of plastic waste: Analysing issues of sustainability and accountability
• Nature protection versus nature restoration: Who benefits and who loses out?

Project name: Catalysts for Change and Collaborations in New Writing for the Stage: Theatre Underground, University of Essex and Mercury Theatre 1979-96

Funding: CHASE Collaborative Doctoral Award PhD Studentship

Overview: This project explores the history of Theatre Underground (1979-96), University of Essex campus theatre, and the relationships it forged between ‘town and gown’. New writing for the stage brought to life significant events in local history and new drama in translation brought world theatre to Essex. Research will focus on the Theatre Underground archive at the University of Essex. At the Mercury Theatre Colchester, interpretations of the production materials will be explored with theatre practitioners; and public engagement workshops, led by the student, will seek interviews with alumni and audience members of Theatre Underground.
