Human Rights Week 2024 Schedule

Human Rights Week at Essex takes place from 9-13 December 2024. We have some amazing events for you to participate in.

Date and Time Location  Event
Tuedsay 10 December, 8am - 10am Steps between squares 3 and 4. Chalking of the Steps, this year on International Human Rights Day itself. Join our annual tradition of inscribing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on the university steps. In collaboration with the Uni's Amnesty Society, students and staff will write UDHR Articles in multiple languages, symbolising their universal significance. We would love to have as many languages as possible represented, so please come with all your linguistic talents!
Tuedsay 10 December, 11am -12 Noon By the Campus Cat Statue Human Rights Timeline
Experience a journey through time as we read aloud significant human rights milestones from 1948 – the year that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted, up to 2024, celebrating achievements and remembering challenges in the human rights movement. We have painstakingly collated human rights milestones for each year since the Universal Declaration was adopted; come help us read these, and commemorate all that has been achieved, and reflect on all that is still to be done.
Tuedsay 10 December, 2pm -  3pm By the Campus Cat Statue Readings of Poetry and Fiction on Human Rights Themes
Join the Human Rights Centre for special readings of human rights texts, as we reflect on the enduring importance of human rights in our world today. We have put together an impressive catalogue of short readings that you can choose from, or please come with your own.
Wednesday 11 December, 4.30pm - 6pm Zoom Webinar Annual Human Rights Lecture. This year’s lecture is delivered by Judge Iulia Motoc, ICC, Pre-Trial Division, in conversation with Dr Matthew Gillett with an Introduction by Professor Carla Ferstman, Essex Human Rights Centre Director.
