Nick's research interests span a number of areas of applied marine biology, particularly biological materials used by marine invertebrates for specialised purposes, marine larval ecology and larval settlement behaviour. Much of his work has involved the study of biological adhesives to inspire new synthetic glues and assist in the development of marine antifouling coatings, as well as the development of novel biological or bio-inspired coatings. He collaborates widely with industry and has received funding for his research from industry, charities and defence organisations. He is a founding member of the European Network of Bioadhesion Expertise and an Editorial Board member of Marine Biotechnology and the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering.
