On the evening of the 23 November we welcomed undergraduate and postgraduate Scholars outside the Student Silberrad Centre for hot chocolate and networking as we celebrated their achievements at the Essex Scholars Reception. With the Vice Chancellor and Registrar also in attendance to meet with students and hear about their time at Essex so far, it was a busy and eventful evening with lots of opportunities for our Scholars to meet with fellow students on scholarship programmes across the University.

Scholarships are an important way in which we bring talented and committed students from around the world to Essex to study. This year there are 30 different awards including Chevening Scholarships, University of Sanctuary Scholarships and Sports Scholarships to name but a few. Over 300 students have been awarded scholarships to study a range of subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Scholarships are funded by the University and by generous donors and make a real difference to our students and their studies, so I’d like to record my thanks on behalf of the University to all who support our students through scholarships. They are always highly valued.

At Essex we are committed to two things: excellence in teaching and excellence in research. We’re recognised in the Times Good University Guide as being in the top 25 for research quality and this means that our Scholars learn from those who are leading fields. We value original, relevant, independent research and we pride ourselves on being a university where curiosity and pushing boundaries, is expected. From pioneering research which informs social change, to students and staff who actively question the way things are, to drive change and progress in the world. Our talented Scholars contribute to, as well as benefit from, this environment.

We’re also a growing university with more than 17,800 students now studying at Essex. Students come from across the world to join us. Over a third of our students at Essex are from outside the UK, with more than 140 countries represented within our student body. Essex is ranked in the top 25 for international outlook in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and our Scholars too represent this diversity of background that enriches the Essex experience.

It was wonderful to be back celebrating in person and to hear directly from our Scholars about what their scholarship means to them and what they are enjoying about Essex. We look forward to seeing what’s next from these individuals.
