COP27 is the next annual UN climate change conference. COP stands for Conference of the Parties, and the summit will be attended by the countries that signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a treaty that came into force in 1994.
The hosting of COP27 in the green city of Sharm El-Sheikh this year marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This year the conference will focus on four topics: mitigation, adaptation, finance and collaboration.
When is it?
7th - 18th November
Who will be attending?
More than 2000 speakers, 35000 participants and 300 points of discussion are expected throughout the week. They will be joined by 90 heads of state.
What are the goals this year?
There are five visions this year:
- Achieving as much progress on every item under negotiations. Delivering a comprehensive Mitigation Work Program, achieving progress on the Global Goal on Adaptation, addressing the Loss and Damage deficit and addressing the climate finance challenge.
- Basing all work on science in the form of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and other reports which have consistently established the need for urgent action.
- Ensure that no country or group is left behind through building trust and understanding
- Commitment to the rules and principles that govern the collective action to tackle climate change and its impacts
- Emphasising the need to move from negotiations to implementation
The targets are:
- Shifting from pledging to implementation
- Delivering on adaptation
- Action to clarify support for loss and damage
- Delivering climate finance for developing countries
- Ensure a managed transition, based on agreed principles in the Convention and its Paris Agreement.
