In a historic triumph, the Essex Women's Basketball team has done themselves and the University proud by clinching the BUCS Premier South Championships for the first time ever. Reflecting on this incredible journey, we caught up with one of the team's key players, Tia Freeman, to delve deeper into the decisive moments and aspirations that have defined this ground-breaking season.
Standout Moment: A Victory of Confidence
For the team, a defining moment came when they triumphed over Cardiff Met at home. Despite a formidable opponent ranking second in the league and a previous close encounter away, this was a victory to celebrate. "They were second in the league, and we didn’t beat them by as many as we wished away, so beating them at home with confidence was great for the team," shares Tia.
Impact Beyond the Court: Building Community
The team's success extends far beyond the confines of the court. Their passion for basketball resonates within the university community and beyond, helping to foster greater engagement in sports overall. "I hope our success in the league will create a buzz around basketball for people at the university and get more students involved in sports overall," adds our number 8, Tia Freeman. Through community outreach initiatives and partnerships with organisations like Essex Rebels, the team actively promotes the sport in local schools, through CHUMS holiday camps at the University and offers enticing taster sessions, forging lasting connections beyond the University enclave.
Personal Pride and Perseverance
For each member, being part of this historic season is a source of immense pride and personal fulfilment. "I feel really proud to be part of this team and being able to go the regular season unbeaten". With dreams of replicating the feat achieved in her first year studying at Essex, the desire to make it happen all over again is firmly in sight.
Celebrating Milestones: Excited Yet Staying Focused
While basking in the glory of their league victory, the team remains resolutely focused as they gear up for the next challenge. "Everyone was extremely proud and excited when we won the league," shares Tia, yet hoping “we can continue it in the playoffs and win the BUCS Big Wednesday final. Winning the league allows us to go straight into the quarter finals and gives us a home draw, so I think we’re all excited for our next game on route to the finals!"
As the Essex Women's Basketball team continues to script their story, it is their spirit, dedication to community engagement, hunger, and belief to achieve that continues to embody the essence of sporting excellence, surrounded by the overwhelming support from the University staff, services, friends and family. With every training session and game, they continue to push and strive, making them an inspiring generation destined to leave their mark on the landscape of University sports.
