Chiara studies in our Language and Linguistics department and spent a semester abroad in Uruguay in 2022-2023. We met her to know more about her time abroad and what challenges and experiences have made her semester abroad so special…
Why did you choose to go to Uruguay?
I chose Uruguay for multiple reasons. The first and probably the one that weighed the most at the time of choosing which country to go to was my strong wish of discovering a new country; challenging myself being alone in a new environment and finding my own ways to become more independent with only the help of the language.
The second reason is because it makes the most sense career-wise. I mean that in the future I would rather work with Spanish-speakers from Latin America because my dream is to move to the United States or Canada and I would work with Latin American Spanish the most if I can fulfil dream.
I am happy I chose Uruguay, it proved to be the best choice of exchange semester ever.
What are the differences between a Uruguayan university and Essex?
Tons! I would say that when you experience the University of Essex you feel more in a public school with a strong community of international students while Uruguay felt more like a private school environment (which it was indeed).
Also, people at the University of Montevideo dressed really elegantly and formally and it looked like a work environment.
What were the best moments from your time in Uruguay?
The relaxing moments with my friends at the beach. Just like in the movies, every day after school we used to meet and go to the beach, listen to the sound of the waves and play some music. The beaches in Uruguay were always empty and it was so relaxing to just sit there and be with my friends. This made my time extra special there.
What was your favourite local meal?
I don’t have a favourite because I loved them all! Alfajores, el asado, empanadas and the drink daiquiri!
Uruguayan food is really similar to Argentinian and it’s meat-based. They often meet for barbecues and love to drink fernét and daiquiris.
Did you feel different after your experience abroad?
Absolutely. In Uruguay I underwent a profound transformation. I became a completely different individual, my independence grew significantly.
Additionally, through my experiences in Uruguay, I have acquired the skills to thrive in solitude and rebuild my life from scratch. Moreover, immersing myself in diverse cultures has cultivated greater patience and empathy within me, fostering a more open-minded perspective.
What would your advice be to anyone considering studying in another country?
Do it! Do it! Do it!It’s scary at first, I know, but after your year abroad you’ll be thriving with and within yourself. Becoming an exchange student opens your mind, makes you more independent, more patient, more communicative, kinder, and so much more. Plus, it’s always a new way to travel and if you don’t do it now you’ll never do it!
