Over the last seven years, I have had 282 MBA students complete my 'Sustainable Operations' module as part of The Essex MBA. They then went back to their companies or took up new challenges, and hopefully put the learning to work. The Essex MBA may open new possibilities, but it also can be a challenge to deal with those new positions and taking on more leadership responsibility.

In 2022 we started to include a peer-coaching session into the programme, to help students enhance their management practice and understand the benefit of coaching in organizations.

In addition, individual career coaching sessions can help students to better understand their current situation and to refine the smaller details, that often make a big difference in advancing a career or achieving life's goals. Especially international students are faced with new situations and possibly a job market in the UK that is completely different than the one in their home country.

Career coaching can help to set or clarify career goals and to develop a career action plan. This might also include identifying personal development goals and how to network effectively and to build relations to future employers. Understanding cultural differences and raising awareness to possible pitfalls in a job search can be crucial. A review of one’s CV and LinkedIn profile, as well as tips on presentation techniques and job interview strategies can be invaluable.

Career coaching can take several forms on The Essex MBA. Sometimes it is just a brief chat after a lecture, that can give a student a new direction to explore. Some lecturers have experience in industry, or visiting lecturers bring a wealth of current industry knowledge. The Career Services desk can give input and the collaboration with Essex Startups and the Innovation Center provides further opportunities.

As leadership and career coach, I often give more in-depth, formal coaching sessions on an individual basis. Every situation is different and students need to take time to analyze their needs. A professional coach can help to sort through the various challenges that students face during their studies, and also when they have finished the MBA programme. Part-time students, that are balancing work and study, can benefit from guidance on how to put the learning directly into their work and organizations.

Students appreciate the personal attention given to them. Here is what some of them said.

“You have encouraged and motivated me to understand the importance of using different knowledge and experiences in business, and I am thankful for this. I can’t wait to use the learnings and experiences to create positive change for myself and my future teams and organisations.” - Nelson N., Philippines, MBA Graduate 2023

“You really inspire me. I see myself as a leader and coach. For both, you have raised the standard bar to the next height that I want to strive for. You gave me a clearer vision of who I want to become.” - Leo K., Vietnam, MBA Graduate 2022

“Thank you for your support on my project proposal, I received a really strong score, your suggestions made for a compelling case.” - Michael M., UK, MBA Graduate 2021

“You inspired me deeply. This has allowed me to grow further in my career, and I have such a breakthrough because of your guidance. Thank you again.” - Ann W., Taiwan, MBA Graduate 2018
