Here at the University of Essex, we are proud to be a diverse and inclusive community that encourages everyone to come as they are and to be their whole selves. As such, we are committed to cultivating an environment built on mutual respect, understanding, and the celebration of our differences.

Our institution is enriched by the wide array of cultures, perspectives, and identities that make up our student body and staff. Our Muslim community is a vital part of this enrichment, contributing not only to the academic excellence we pursue but also to the broader cultural and social life that makes our University a truly global and inclusive place.

While the vast majority of our Muslim community here at Essex have not experienced Islamophobia on our campuses, we recognize that it has become a concerning issue both in society and within institutions. It is therefore crucial to acknowledge that Islamophobia, like all forms of hate and discrimination, not only threatens the safety and well-being of those directly affected but also undermines the values of equality and inclusivity that we hold dear.

Islamophobia manifests in many ways, from overt acts of violence and hate speech to subtle prejudices that can marginalize and alienate Muslim members of our community. As an institution, we want to send a clear and unequivocal message: Islamophobia has no place here and we are committed to standing against all forms of discrimination and bigotry.

We all have a role to play in making our University continues to be a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. Combating Islamophobia is not just the responsibility of those affected by it, but of all of us. Together, we can continue building upon a community that values every individual, stands up for what is right, and promotes an environment of learning, growth, and respect for all.

We urge every member of our community to be an active ally in this cause. This means speaking out when you witness acts of discrimination, reporting them to Report and Support, a personal tutor or a line manager; and educating yourself about the harmful impact of prejudice and discrimination.

Let us all commit to fostering a stronger, more inclusive future where every member of our community can thrive.
