Essex Student Journal Conference 2025, Wednesday 30 April, 2pm to 4.30pm, Ivor Crewe Seminar Room

The Essex Student Journal Conference

The Essex Student Journal is Essex's diamond open access journal run by students, for students.

The Essex Student Journal Conference is an annual conference which celebrates the success of student writing and publishing at Essex. Students who have published with the Journal will deliver short presentations about their published research and delegates will be able to network and reflect upon the research and writing presented as part of the conference.

The Conference is a celebration of our students’ work, allowing a unique opportunity for all students and staff, as well as their friends and family, to come together to hear more about the great work our students are undertaking here at Essex.

During the conference, delegates will have the opportunity to hear from students from across a range of disciplines, who have published research papers, poems, case studies, essays, short stories, and more.

This year, the conference is taking a hybrid format to allow even more attendees to join us.

The programme

The full programme is yet to be announced, but some of the confirmed presentation titles include:

  • Is Middle English a koiné language?
  • The Green Industrial Revolution and the Future of Steel Production: Using the Innovative Sheffield Cell
  • Narrative of the Suicide Bereaved
  • Feline Ownership and Well-Being During COVID-19 Mandated Lockdowns
  • The intention underneath: Can the motor system ascribe intentions?

Our presenters will deliver short presentations, followed by a question and answer discussion. There will be a chance for you to ask our presenters anything you might wish to know, including about their research, their future plans, and their experiences publishing with the Essex Student Journal.

For those joining us on our Colchester campus, we’ll also be incorporating networking time into the conference. During this time, we’ll be encouraging attendees and presenters to informally chat about their research further, while enjoying drinks and snacks kindly provided by Cambridge University Press.

Championing student voices

The Essex Student Journal Conference is a true celebration of the fantastic work our students are completing while at Essex, increasing the recognition students receive when publishing with the Essex Student Journal. The journal itself provides a crucial platform for our students’ voices to be heard more widely, while giving invaluable experience of the publishing process. By extending this to the conference, our presenters can showcase their expertise in an additional format whilst gaining firsthand experience of presenting to a wider audience.

In our conference proceedings from last year, our previous Student Editor Kimia Aghasoleimani spoke about the impact of the Essex Student Journal Conference:

"I feel that one of the most outstanding aspects of the conference was that it showcased the positive impact that open research can have, particularly on students’ development... Given the wide international community at the University, I feel that the Journal and this conference provide students with the most valuable opportunity to establish themselves in research and academia, whilst increasing the diversity of the student community’s research outputs."
