This research seminar as part of the Essex Business School Research Seminar Series is co-hosted by the Essex Accounting Centre (EAC) and the Centre for Accountability and Global Development (CAGD).

The aim of the Essex Accounting Centre (EAC) research seminar series is to support our world-class research activities in five key areas;

  1. accounting and global development
  2. capital markets, audit, regulation and reporting
  3. publicness and resilience
  4. precarity, exclusion and social justice
  5. environment, climate change and vulnerability

The seminar series is also expected to promote interdisciplinary research that links the work of members of the centre with others both within the university and with external institutions.

The Centre for Accountability and Global Development (CAGD) is a vibrant research hub of Essex Business School that promotes debate and seeks solutions to various issues of global interest.

CAGD adopts an interdisciplinary approach to research focusing on accountability aspects across various societal spheres (i.e. social, business and public governance), in both emerging and advanced economies contexts

Seminar abstract

Wind power has expanded quickly in Brazil, while solar power lags there and both wind and solar power have struggled to take off in South Africa.

Professor Kathryn Hochstetler argues that four different political economies;

  1. climate change,
  2. industrial policy,
  3. consumption and distribution,
  4. siting

 help account for energy transition.

However, coalitions are being built on each of these at the same time, potentially interlocking to reinforce or counter-balance each other.

The presentation will examine how these processes work in Brazil and South Africa to create distinct national political economies of energy transition.
