Freud Memorial Lecture 2023

Joins us for our annual Freud Memorial Lecture with Patricia Gherovici .

A psychoanalyst functions like a taxi driver who listens to customers’ stories, transporting someone from one place to another. Taking as point of departure the clinical praxis with urban poor people of color (condemned to what sociologists call "social death") and trans identified analysands (who experience their gender issues as a life and death situation) this lecture explores time, payment, destination, and success or failure, death and the drives in psychoanalysis. I will sketch a new grammar of the interaction between the “driver and the driven” to explain how a psychoanalytic practice can become inclusive, conducted and brought to a positive issue, the true destination.

The speaker

Patricia Gherovici, Ph.D. is a psychoanalyst, analytic supervisor, and recipient of the 2020 Sigourney Award for her clinical and scholarly work with Latinx and gender variant communities.

She is co-founder and director of the Philadelphia Lacan Group and Associate Faculty, Psychoanalytic Studies Minor, University of Pennsylvania (PSYS), Honorary Member at IPTAR the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research in New York City,  and Founding Member of Das Unbehagen. 

Her single-authored books include The Puerto Rican Syndrome (Other Press: 2003) winner of the Gradiva Award and the Boyer Prize,  Please Select Your Gender: From the Invention of Hysteria to the Democratizing of Transgenderism (Routledge: 2010) and Transgender Psychoanalysis: A Lacanian Perspective on Sexual Difference  (Routledge: 2017).
