Join the North Essex Astronomical Society for an exciting day of Solar Gazing and ice-cream at the University of Essex.

  • 11am - 3pm, Saturday August 26, 2023.

Our experienced astronomers will be on hand to answer any questions you may have and guide you through the process of safely observing the sun. We will have a range of telescopes and equipment available for you to use, so you can get up close and personal with our nearest star.

Plus, why not pack a picnic to enjoy by the lake or under the shade of our trees in our award-winning, Wivenhoe Park.

Bring your family and friends along for a day of fun and discovery - an event not to be missed!

Ticket prices:

  • Adults: £8
  • Children £6

Ticket includes:

  • Solar gazing with the North Essex Astronomical Society
  • An ice-cream at the event
  • Free parking

Even if the weather is cloudy we will still be on site to answer questions, ever hopeful of a break in the clouds, but viewing may be limited. They will have other activities to keep you entertained.

Activities may include:

  • How big are the planets and how far apart are they – we use household items to demonstrate!
  • Measuring time – what did people do before watches or apps on their phones?
  • Making moon craters
  • Talks about various aspects of astronomy – no prior knowledge is required

Refund information:

  • Tickets are non-refundable unless cancelled by event organisers.
  • If event is cancelled, administrative cost added by Eventbrite cannot be refunded.

Never look at the sun without correct specialist equipment. Permanent eye damage will result.
