The recently broadcast TV drama, “Mr Bates vs The Post Office" focused on the Horizon system and the Post Office scandal. It has been widely noted that the TV dramatization had an unexpectedly profound effect on audiences.

Does this TV drama demonstrate the powerful effect of the arts on society?

What potential does literature have to provoke new insights and understanding of marginalised voices and stories?

This Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Literary Studies seminar will explore this phenomenon. We will discuss the TV dramatization of the events as well as the legal issues related to miscarriages of justice, and the computer technology issues at the heart of this case.

This seminar is ideal for University of Essex students and researchers as well as members of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Literary Studies.

The seminar is a hybrid event, to be held on campus and online. Participants wishing to join remotely can do so via the event Zoom link.
