Official Secrets (directed by Gavin Hood, 2019) dramatises the true story of Katharine Gun, a whistleblower who leaked information about an undercover NSA operation intended to pressure UN Security Council members to support the Iraq War, and The Observer journalist Martin Bright who broke the story.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A discussion with the film's director Gavin Hood and journalist Martin Bright (now Senior Lecturer in Journalism at Essex), chaired by Professor Shohini Chaudhuri.

This is the launch event in a termly journalism film screening series. The series aims to explore how journalists are represented in films and to inspire students about the difference they can make.
