In July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces killed over 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica, a town in eastern Bosnia, in what would be the first recognised genocide in Europe since the Holocaust. Approximately 30,000 women, children and elderly people were also forcibly transferred to Muslim-held areas of Bosnia. The genocide happened in the presence of UN peacekeeping troops and in the wider context of the war in the former Yugoslavia between 1991 and 1995, during which many mass atrocities were committed.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide. The Essex Transitional Justice Network, together with the Human Rights Centre and the Department of Government, invites you to take part in two events to commemorate this anniversary. These events are meant to complement each other, but you are welcome to attend either.

What occurred in Srebrenica raises several questions around international peace and security, peacekeeping operations, as well as accountability for genocide. This panel will provide reflections on what happened in Srebrenica and its consequences, as well as efforts to bring justice to victims.

Speakers

  • Professor Carla Ferstman, Professor Essex Law School and Director of the Essex Human Rights Centre: “Accountability for the Failure to Protect? Navigating between the responsibility of International Organisations and Troop Contributing Countries.”
