A leading Essex expert on European justice has been appointed special adviser to a House of Lords enquiry into security cooperation between the UK and EU post-Brexit.

Professor Steve Peers from our School of Law has researched justice and home affairs cooperation, as well as human rights issues for many years. He will be a special adviser for an enquiry by the House of Lords EU Committee's home affairs sub-committee, which is looking at a future security treaty between the UK and the EU.

The treaty would address how cooperation to deal with shared threats like terrorism and organised crime, consistently with human rights protection, can continue after Brexit.

Professor Peers commented "I'm looking forward to working with members of the House of Lords who are scrutinising UK and EU policy in this area and hoping to make constructive suggestions on this important issue."

Professor Peers writes extensively on Brexit legal issues for various blogs – hear the latest from him on Twitter
