The Good University Guide provides the definitive rankings for UK universities and the most comprehensive overview of higher education in Britain.
The Guide noted that Essex had seen applications rise in 2018 for the fourth year in a row, at a time where other universities are seeing demand fall. Essex also topped the subject tables for dance, drama and cinematics and was the top university in East Anglia for student experience. We were also in the top 10 for politics and sport science with top 20 rankings for american studies, criminology, economics and electronic engineering. On spending on our facilities we were 5th overall.
Earlier this month Essex was shortlisted for University of the Year in the Times High Education Awards – the most prestigious awards in the higher education sector – and shortlisted in the Outstanding Contribution to Leadership Development category.
Essex Vice-Chancellor Professor Anthony Forster said: “We are committed to offering a transformational education for our students which is reflected in the record numbers of students wanting to study with us. We are looking forward to welcoming our largest intake of new students next month and investing further in the student experience including new facilities.
“We value our global community at Essex and all our successes are down to our amazing students, staff and graduates who play a key role in our commitment to making the world a better place.”
A £200million programme of improvements include the opening next month of our £13.2million STEM Centre and the new 643-room student accommodation The Copse . Next year will see the opening of our Innovation Centre, a hi-tech hothouse providing space and hands-on start-up support for 50 businesses and organisations.
Essex was rated Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2017 and is in the top 20 for research excellence in the Research Excellence Framework 2014. For the past six years we have been in the top 15 in England for student satisfaction (National Student Survey 2018, overall student satisfaction, English mainstream universities*).
