The ShanghaiRankings rate university subjects by research and reputation. Our top 30 ranking in the political science category measures Essex out of 400 global universities.
It’s further recognition of our long-held reputation for world-leading politics research, which in 2013 won us the first and only Regius Professorship of Political Science, awarded by HM The Queen, and currently held by Professor Kristian Skrede Gleditsch.
Professor Lawrence Ezrow, Head of the Department of Government, said: “Our scholars in the Department of Government are committed to excellence in research and research-led teaching.
“Our faculty publishes on important topics including armed conflict and democratic elections, and we communicate these insights to our students. We are very pleased that the worldwide rankings reflect this longstanding commitment to research.”
Professor John Preston, Deputy Dean (Research) (Social Sciences), added: “Our reputation for world-leading politics research is well established – our academics have attained first place in every national UK research excellence exercise. This worldwide ShanghaiRanking reflects the commitment of our academics to rigorous research that informs policy and, through research-led teaching, inspires students."
The ShanghaiRankings rate university subject areas based on five metrics: the number of papers authored; the ratio of citation of papers published to the average citations in the same subject; the number of papers authored in collaboration by researchers from different countries; the number of papers published in top journals; and the number of significant awards won.
Our excellence in economics research was also recognised in the rankings, achieving a position of 101-150, out of 500 universities, placing us in at least the top 30%.
