Our position as a leading university for social sciences has been highlighted once again with Essex 5th in the UK for politics in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.

The Good University Guide is one of the most comprehensive overviews of higher education in Britain and Essex was also ranked highly for Drama, Dance and Cinematics; Creative Writing; Criminology; History of Art; and Sports Science.

Head of the Department of Government, Professor Shane Martin, was interviewed in the Good University Guide about the rise of politics courses.

He said: “We are really pleased to see Essex ranked as one of the very best in the country. We are home to some of the best political scientists in the UK and we’re focused on our expertise helping to deliver a transformative education for our students.

“Most of our degree programmes offer a placement year and these can be with some of our leading institutions including the UK Parliament. During their studies students are encouraged to develop critical strategic thinking plus the skills in data and statistics which will give them an advantage in the workplace or allow them to go onto further research.”

Essex is 5th nationally for overall student satisfaction in politics (NSS 2019) and also the only UK university to have a Regius Professor in Political Science, an honour conferred by the Queen. Essex has also been consistently ranked number one for research quality since national research assessment began including the most recent Research Excellence Framework.
