Professor is new Deputy Lieutenant for Essex

University of Essex Professor of Environment and Society Jules Pretty has been appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Essex by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant, Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst.

The role of the Deputy Lieutenant is to assist the Lord-Lieutenant in her duties and Professor Pretty is one of three new Deputy Lieutenants to be appointed.

“It is a pleasure and an honour to be appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Essex,” said Professor Pretty. “This is a welcome personal tribute which also reflects the University of Essex’s positive contribution to the county through the research and education we conduct for the benefit of the people of Essex.”

A distinguished and award-winning author, Professor Pretty has also been recognised as among the world’s most cited scholars, collaborating with researchers around the world.

He is former Deputy-Chair of the UK government’s Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment. He received an OBE for services to sustainable agriculture, an honorary degree from Ohio State University and the British Science Association Presidential Medal.

His book This Luminous Coast won the New Angle Prize for Literature in 2013, and The East Country was winner of the East Anglian book of the year in 2018. He was appointed President of Essex Wildlife Trust in 2019, is Chair of the Essex Climate Action Commission and is host of the podcast Louder Than Words.

The other two Deputy Lieutenants to be appointed are Duncan Clark and Alix Mason JP.
