The University of Essex’s accommodation team have been shortlisted for a national award thanks to their commitment to enhancing student experience and satisfaction.

Accommodation Essex is in the running for the University Team of the Year prize in this year’s Student Accommodation Awards.

The celebration, which forms part of the Property Week Awards, recognise universities which not only offer high quality accommodation, but are continually looking to improve the living experience of its students.

Essex has introduced two new communities within its accommodation portfolio for the new academic year in a bid to make a more welcome and inclusive environments.

The Athlete Village and LGBTQ+ accommodation were set-up following a consultation with students and aim to meet the needs of different students, who can live with people who have common interests and shared experiences.

Helena Newton, Director of Campus Services at the University of Essex, said: “We are truly honoured to be shortlisted for the University Team of the Year award.

“This nomination is a testament to the hard work, commitment, and passion that our team invests in providing the best housing experiences for our university students.

“At the heart of our mission is the belief that a comfortable and supportive living environment is crucial for a student's overall well-being and success. We have strived to create not just spaces to reside in but vibrant communities that foster personal growth, connection, and academic achievement.

“We remain committed to raising the bar and setting new standards in university accommodation.”

Dominic King, Student Activities Manager for the University of Essex Students’ Union said: “The Athlete Village will bring together like-minded students, who have a passion for sport and physical activity to one accommodation setting themed around sport.

“As part of the Athlete Village, students will get access to over £700 worth of services, including free upgrades on Gym memberships, BUCS and Club participation fees, sports clothing and early access to accommodation.

“This will help us to build upon the supportive environment we look to create around each of our sports teams and ultimately help towards the Student Living Experience.”

Essex plans to introduce specific accommodation for budding entrepreneurs and students with an interest in volunteering from the 2024/25 academic year.

Activities for these residents will be run and supported by Essex Startup and the Students Union Volunteering teams.

The winner of the University Team of the Year award will be announced at a ceremony at The O2 in London on Tuesday 5 December.
