Essex Law School retains position in world's top 50 in THE rankings

Essex Law School has retained its position among the global elite after finishing in the top 50 in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject.

Law at Essex was ranked 49th in the world and was the 10th highest in the UK, according to the rankings.

Social sciences was also ranked in the top 100 in the world, coming in 74th globally and 12th highest in the UK.

The rankings show the strongest universities around the world for key subjects, assessing research-intensive universities across their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

Professor Onyeka Osuji, Dean of Essex Law School, said: “To be ranked 49th in the THE World University Rankings by Subject underlines the established position of the Essex Law School as a global top 50 law school.

“Our commitment to excellence to education enables us to provide a student centred transformational legal education supported by an innovative curriculum, clinical legal education and multifarious opportunities for experiential learning.”

Professor Nancy Kula, Executive Dean of Social Sciences at Essex, added: “We are delighted with the great social sciences performance, which underscores our strong position globally and as also reflected in our having four subjects in the top 10 for REF.

Essex is also ranked highly in other areas in the 2024 THE World University Rankings by Subject:

• Business and Economics: 151–175

• Psychology: 176–200

• Computer Science: 201–250

• Arts and Humanities: 251–300

• Life Sciences: 301–400

• Clinical and Health: 401–500

In terms of UK universities, Computer Science ranked 23rd in this year’s THE World University Rankings by Subject, Business and Economics came 26th, and Psychology ranked 30th.

Essex’s success in the global subject rankings come after it was also placed in the top 60 in the world in this year’s THE World Impact Rankings, ranking 56 out of 1,591 institutions around the globe.
