Free fun kids' basketball contest organised with Essex Rebels

Young basketballers can take part in an exciting new free tournament that brings together elite athletes, the University of Essex, and the police.

The inaugural ‘Ballin’ with a Bobby’ tournament will see the Essex Rebels stars run lively games that promote fun and teamwork – with police on hand to provide helpful crime-prevention tips.

Primary and secondary school age children are invited to take part in the event which unfolds on Thursday August 29 at the Essex Sport Arena, on the Colchester Campus.

"We are super excited to launch the new Ballin' with a Bobby Tournament, an innovative event that combines basketball with education and community engagement," said Jennifer Stanhope, Sports Development Officer

"An opportunity supported by our Active Essex Partnership, Essex Rebels athletes, and the local police officers, creating a unique opportunity for fun, learning and building positive relationship for young people across the region."

A range of activities are on offer including interactive crime prevention sessions, basketball drills led by the Rebels, and friendly gameplay scenarios.

Where each team will have the guidance of both a professional player and a local police officer.

It will conclude with an awards ceremony where kids can meet and receive autographs from the Rebels players.

Additionally, each child will receive a healthy packed lunch, and families will have the chance to learn about other sports on offer at the University, including basketball, climbing, tennis, and more.

Supportive environment 

The Active Essex-supported event aims to provide participants with not only a thrilling day of sports but an opportunity to engage with local police officers in a positive and supportive environment.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve perceptions of law enforcement among youth and reduce crime by involving them in constructive community activities.

The primary school sessions take place from 9am-12pm, with secondary school children invited down from 12-3pm.
