The Property Week Student Accommodation Awards have recognised the University of Essex for its innovative approach to building a sense of community on its campuses.
The Accommodation Essex team won the Innovation Award at the prestigious awards, with the team praised by judges for its “research-led approach”, “excellent student engagement” and “clear impact on the student community”.
Accommodation Essex Engagement Manager Vanya Campbell said: ”We are truly honoured to receive the Innovation Award at the Property Week Student Accommodation Awards.
“This recognition is a testament to our unwavering commitment to redefining the student living experience. By prioritizing research, creativity, and care, we strive to create spaces where students don’t just live, but thrive. To have our dedication celebrated is both humbling and inspiring, and it fuels our passion to keep pushing boundaries for the students of today and tomorrow."
The student accommodation team conducted extensive research with students to see how the residential experience could be enhanced at Essex. Inspired by a UCAS report emphasising the importance of community, the team looked to develop tailored solutions which elevated student wellbeing and fostered a supportive environment.
Creating groups around student interests
Based on the research findings, the team introduced innovative community groups within student accommodation including:
The Athlete Village: Caters to passionate athletes by providing a dedicated space for sports people with comprehensive support services including coaching, personalised training plans, and a generous welcome package.
Start-up Square: Empowers aspiring entrepreneurs by offering essential resources, mentorship, and regular idea generating sessions facilitated by Essex Startups, providing students with a launchpad to refine and realise their ideas.
Volunteering Square: Encourages social engagement by giving students access to exclusive VTeam merchandise from the Students' Union's volunteering programme, freebies, and information about voluntary opportunities. Regular workshops and check-ins support students in their volunteering pursuits.
LGBTQ+ Accommodation: Recognising the importance of inclusivity, Accommodation Essex offers dedicated LGBTQ+ accommodation providing a safe and affirming living environment tailored to individuals' identities.
Collaborative approach to building community
The team collaborated closely with university departments, external partners, and student organisations as part of the project. Strategic partnerships with Essex Sport, Essex Startups, and the Students' Union have also been vital.
