The Regional Director of Public Health for East of England has joined Essex’s Institute of Public Health and Wellbeing as an Honorary Professor.

Dr Aliko Ahmed, who steered the eastern region through the Covid-19 pandemic, provides critical strategic leadership and input on national and regional public health priorities, including local and regional healthcare needs.

He is a globally-recognised health physician, epidemiologist and health diplomat with over three decades of experience spanning clinical medicine, academia and public health policy and practice in both low- and high-income countries.

As Regional Director of Public Health he works collaboratively with NHS hospitals, local authorities and universities to address public health challenges and improve health outcomes across the region. He also provides strategic leadership, guidance, and oversight on public health initiatives.

Dr Ahmed founded and led the Public Health Africa Policy Forum at Chatham House, where he convenes expert groups and advises African heads of state and ministers on public health policy. He was also part of the Chatham House Commission for Universal Health, which produced an influential publication on global health policy.

As a global health diplomat, he has led and contributed to bilateral health initiatives involving the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Public Health England, and international organisations such as the World Health Organisation.

Speaking about his Essex appointment, Dr Ahmed said: “As Regional Director of Public Health I believe that research evidence must inform decisions across the health sector today more than ever.

“I look forward to share views and ensure innovative solutions can be identified and implemented to improve health outcomes regionally, nationally, and globally to reduce health inequalities.

“I am working to strengthen partnerships among regional higher education institutions and health and social care services stakeholders to facilitate a healthier future in our region. I am now able to be part of both communities.”

Professor Mariachiara Di Cesare, Director of the Institute of Public Health and Wellbeing added: “Our community of passionate public health researchers at the University of Essex will benefit enormously from Aliko’s expertise and vision.

“Better health and wellbeing for all is our mission, and having Aliko as part of our team is a great opportunity to achieve our ambition.”
