Professor Henry Agyei-Boapeah

Biography

Henry Agyei-Boapeah is a Professor of Accounting at the Essex Business School of the University of Essex. Prior to joining the University of Essex, he was an Associate Professor in Accounting first at the University of Southampton and subsequently at the University of Nottingham. In addition, Henry had previously held full-time academic appointments at the University of York, Liverpool John Moores University and Liverpool Hope University - all in the UK; as well as part-time academic positions at Loughborough University (UK), Nottingham Trent University (UK), University of Ghana (Ghana) and Ashesi University (Ghana). He also worked as a Credit Risk Analyst at Zenith Bank (Ghana) Limited prior to pursuing a career in academia. Henry holds a PhD (Finance) degree and an MSc. Banking & Finance degree (with distinction) from Loughborough University (UK), and a BSc. Accounting degree (with first class) from the University of Ghana (Ghana). Additionally, he is a qualified Accountant, having completed the professional accountancy programme of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (Ghana). He won the "Overall Best Student Award" in Advanced Financial Reporting during the May 2007 professional examinations of the Institute. Henry is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK. Henry's research interest lies in the broad areas of accountability, governance, and finance. His work on topics such as executive compensation, corporate governance, environmental accounting, and mergers and acquisitions has published in top peer-reviewed academic journals including Abacus, European Accounting Review, Accounting Forum, Review of Quantitative Finance & Accounting, International Review of Financial Analysis, Journal of International Accounting, Auditing & Taxation, International Journal of Finance & Economics, European Management Review, among others. He has also published a corporate finance book and presented his research at international conferences in the US, UK, Italy, and Ghana. His conference paper won the "Overall Best Manuscript Award" at the 18th International Academy of Management & Business Conference in Rome. His teaching interest cuts across Accounting and Finance, having taught modules such as Financial Accounting & Governance, Advanced Financial Reporting, Management Accounting, and Financial Management to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. At the University of Nottingham, Henry served as the Deputy Director of the MBA programme, and again served as the Programme Leader (Director) for the MSc. Management with Business Finance programme when he worked at the University of York. On the academic citizenship front, Henry has served as a reviewer for reputable journals including Accounting Forum, International Review of Financial Analysis, British Journal of Management, Journal of Business Research, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Accounting in Emerging Economies, and others. Henry is also an External Examiner for the Accounting programmes/modules at Coventry University.
