Profile
Biography
Dr. Fatih Gulec is a YUFE Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Essex, in the Department of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering. He holds a PhD in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the Izmir Institute of Technology. He gained experience in both public and private sectors and has held research positions at institutions like the Technical University of Berlin in Germany and York University in Canada. His work has been acknowledged with awards including the DAAD Postdoctoral Fellowship, the YUFE Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship, and the IEEE Turkey Doctoral Thesis Award. His research focuses on molecular communication, and computational biology models aimed at addressing challenges in various fields from healthcare to agriculture. From the molecular dialogues between cells and bacteria to the acoustic and electrical signals used by plants, his work seeks to uncover the hidden languages of life. Central to these explorations is mathematical modeling, which he employs to decode and simulate these complex communication networks. In his current project, Dr. Gulec is developing real-time, cost-effective smart agriculture techniques to monitor plant stress. These techniques involve capturing electrophysiological and airborne sound signals emitted by plants and decoding them through signal processing and machine learning. His interdisciplinary approach draws on concepts from communication engineering, biology, chemistry, and computer science to offer practical solutions to real-world challenges. Additionally, Dr. Gulec serves as a reviewer for various conferences, including the IEEE International Conference on Communications, and well-regarded journals such as IEEE Transactions on Molecular, Biological and Multi-Scale Communications, IEEE Communications Letters, IEEE Transactions on Communications, Elsevier Nano Communication Networks, and Nature Scientific Data.
