Catalysts for Change and Collaborations in New Writing for the Stage: Theatre Underground, University of Essex and Mercury Theatre 1979-96
This project explores the history of Theatre Underground (1979-96), University of Essex campus theatre, and the relationships it forged between ‘town and gown’. New writing for the stage brought to life significant events in local history and new drama in translation brought world theatre to Essex. The development and subsequent staging of avantgarde and sometimes radical plays at the University of Essex, intended to challenge its audience both creatively and intellectually;

The different influences on and currents within British theatre during the 70s or 80s, such as Brecht, the angry young men, Fringe, Agitprop and Women's theatre.

The opposition of radical and socialist feminism and how these differences manifest in the works of Roger Howard and Michèle Roberts; the roots of female oppression as explored in plays of the 70s and 80s
