Biography

Iain started on a Youth Training Scheme at Rochford Hospital in 1990 when he was 17. In 1991 he started as an Auxillary Nurse on a Care of the Elderly Ward before starting his Nurse Training in the spring of 1992. Iain trained at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing at St Thomas Hospital, London. On qualifying he took a Staff Nurse post on a Cardiothoracic Surgery ward. Following a clinical career that included time in the community as a Community Staff Nurse, Charge nurse of acute medical elderly ward and a stint as a clinical development nurse, Iain spent just under a year as a interim Lead Nurse for Medicine at Southend Univeristy Hospital before taking up a post as the Hospitals Practice Development and Research nurse (PDRN). In 2008, having been working part time for 2 years as a Lecturer Practitioner for the University Of Essex while in his PDRN post, Iain made the permanent switch to education and joined the Univeristy of Essex full time. Iain is married and has two daughters. His wife Rachel is a clinical nurse specialist in Gynaecology Oncology at Southend Univeristy Hospital. Iain is a keen open water swimmer and Chairman of Chalkwell Redcaps Open Water Swimming Club. A keen sportsman, he participates in regional and national swimming and triathlon events. He also enjoys football, running and climbing and is a voluntary RNLI lifeboat crew member. In 2003 Iain was recognised by the Strategic Health Authority for innovation and leadership in services for older people and chosen to represent Essex at Department of Health 12 month leadership programme for nurses working with older people.
