Biography
Steve is a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Division Lead in the Interdisciplinary Research and Practice Division in the School of Health and Social Care at the University of Essex. Steve currently leads the MSc and apprenticeship (PGDip.) programmes in Leadership in Health and Care. He has worked in Organisational Development as an Education Developer focussing on the development of pedagogic practice through leading the AdvanceHE accredited PGCHEP and Cadenza programmes, including the supervision of pedagogic research. Steve has a background teaching in the Life Sciences at Essex and at the University of Aberdeen and alongside the Leadership programmes, currently focuses on developing academic skills, and development of pedagogic practice through mentoring and supporting colleagues across the seven divisions in HSC. He is also involved in curriculum design and development and provides academic support to students in HSC through teaching on Leadership, Adult Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Social Work, Global Public Health, Advanced Clinical Practice and the Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology programmes. Steve is the Senior Personal Tutor in HSC and the Director of Staff Development and Wellbeing. He has been a qualified Mental Health First Aid Instructor for MHFA England since 2018 and has trained staff and students in Mental Health awareness and how to respond and support those in crisis or with additional needs. He is also certified in working with people with mental health needs. He is interested in the relationship between stress and burnout and the links between stress, trauma and addiction, and mental health. Steve has experienced Essex from wide range of perspectives as an UG student, PGR student, Post-doctoral Researcher, Lecturer and a member of Professional Services. He completed the PG Certificate in Higher Education Practice at Essex and has been a recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award in both early career and experienced categories and has been a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2017.
