Profile
Biography
I joined the University of Essex in 2004. I grew up in the Lake Constance area in the South of Germany, close to the Swiss, Austrian and French border. My university education included Germanistik and Theologie in Tübingen (Germany), and Linguistics and English Language with Computer Science in Edinburgh (UK). Before joining the University of Essex, I worked as a free-lance translator for ten years (business and technical/scientific translation, editing translations). I have been teaching translation and interpreting on mastery level at Essex since 2010, and on our MA programmes in translation / interpreting / subtitling since 2012. My teaching responsibilities include the BA final year German, the Intensive Beginners route, and a new beginners module with professional skills. I can offer MA supervision in the areas of - translation - subtitling - interpreting Dissertations I have supervised in the past include the following areas: - subtitling musicals and films, subtitling sports documentaries and medical documentaries, - literary translation focusing on humour, cultural transfer, dialect and slang, nature descriptions, psychogeography, emotions in bereavement and relationships, visibility, minority and gender issues - translating historical and autobiographical novels - translating influencer blogs - work-based dissertations reporting on placements within a translation agency Further information: Member of the Deutscher Germanistenverband DAAD Germany Member of the Association for German Studies AGS in Great Britain and Ireland
