Profile

Biography

I joined the School of Health and Social Care at the University of Essex in 2023. I hold a PhD focused on language difficulties in children and young people in the care system (LACYP). In addition to my role at Essex, I am a visiting lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University London and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Before my appointment, I spent over 23 years working in the fields of children and young people in care (LACYP: looked-after children and young people), children and young people with speech, language and communication difficulties (SLCN), social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD), and special educational needs/disabilities (SEND) in London and overseas. I am passionate about investigating and addressing the complex needs of children and young people in care. I am particularly interested in the following research topics and welcome postgraduate supervision on these subjects: 1. Speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN) in children and young people in care 2. Developmental language disorders (DLD) in children and young people in care 3. SLCN and DLD in care leavers (16+) 4. Effective intervention strategies for SLCN/DLD in children and young people in care 5.  Relationship between Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and SLCN/DLD 6.  Relationship between ACEs and SLCN/DLD in children and young people in care, as well as care leavers. 7. Impact of DLD on life trajectories in children and young people in care, as well as care leavers.
