Profile
Biography
I am the Academic Director on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology program where I teach across research and clinical modules. I have just returned from two years working at the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse where I was the Clinical Lead and Principal Psychologist for the Truth Project. The Truth Project has heard from over 5,000 survivors of child sexual abuse, the most significant level of public engagement in a UK Public Inquiry and this has led to one of the largest data sets relating to child abuse in the world. I continue to work for the Inquiry on a part time basis as a researcher and clinical consultant. My current research interests arise from my work with child abuse survivors and focuses on the relationships between adult survivors and public institutions. I am also interested in the impacts of child abuse on adult social and psychological functioning. I am currently working with a number of other Historical Institutional Inquiry related projects internationally, including the Northern Ireland HIA Redress Board and the Jersey HIA Inquiry Legacy project. I offer clinical consultation to a range of professional groups around engagement with trauma survivors, including legal, media and health and social care professionals. I am a trained Mediator and am interested in the use of mediation as a model to work at the interface of survivor groups and institutions. I have longstanding experience in the area of public participation in health and social care services and have a university role as Lead for Service User and Carer Engagement. This work has become focused on the ways that trauma survivors can engage safely with public bodies and I am currently working with a number of survivor groups around trauma informed models of engagement. I am part of a research group looking at issues of public participation in policy and we have published widely in the area. My other main area of research, policy consultation and practice guidance is in the related field of Recurrent Care Proceedings in Child Protection services. I have been involved in the national study mapping this group and thinking about parental childhood trauma history and how this impacts care proceedings. I have worked with Research in Practice to develop practice guidelines in a number of related areas, and offer service level consultation to a number of providers.
