Biography
Siyat is a member of the Truku people, one of Taiwan's 16 indigenous tribes. He is a psychiatrist with a Masters in Anthropology from UCLA and a Masters in Jungian and Post-Jungian Studies from the University of Essex. His main research interest is the relationship between the individual psyche and the socio-cultural environment from a Jungian perspective. During his studies at the University of Essex, he applies Jungian theory and the guidance of his tutors to his clinical practice and social advocacy work aimed at improving the human rights of minority groups. Siyat is committed to promoting the mental wellbeing of Taiwan's indigenous population in order to improve their quality of life. For example, he has advocated for government funding to provide free psychotherapy to indigenous people who have migrated to urban areas to improve their quality of life. Siyat also provides training and supervision in transcultural psychotherapy for mental health professionals working with minority populations, including indigenous peoples, foreign migrants, the LGBTQIA+ community and victims of political persecution. The aim is to encourage more people to serve these communities. Siyat is currently a board member of the American Board of Examiners of Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy. He wishes to study and shed more light on the collective psyche with his above training backgrounds. Together with his colleagues, he founded the Formosa Institute of Psychodrama and Depth Psychology with the aim of providing interdisciplinary training. Transcultural training materials have also been developed to enable mental health workers to provide more effective services to clients from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds. The aim of this initiative is to promote social justice and improve the quality of clinical services for minority groups.
