Biography
I am a PhD student in Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex, in the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies. My personal and musical background, which includes about 30 years of experience in the music industry, education, performance, and business management, and academic qualifications, including a bachelors degree in music education from Hong Kong Baptist University and a masters in applied music psychology from the University of Leeds, have significantly influenced my research interests in Psychoanalytic Studies. My current research, which is interdisciplinary in nature, investigates sound symbols and indigenous shamanic culture. It aims to explore the existence of Jung's archetype manifestation and hypothesises the implication of sound in human consciousness, a concept emphasised in Jung's Analytical Studies. In 2022, I undertook a significant research project in Applied Music Psychology, investigating how the level of enjoyment of sad music differs between individuals with introverted and extroverted personality traits. This research has practical implications for music therapy and emotional regulation. In 2018, I explored the role of creativity in music education, specifically examining how it can cultivate emotional balance in youth and advocated for including a multicultural approach in school music curricula. These studies have laid a strong foundation for my current research. In the future, I am committed to continuing my work in Psychoanalysis Studies, particularly the concept of C.G. Jung and Sound Healing. I aim to contribute impactful music contributions in psychoanalytic/analytical social and cultural contexts. Outside of research, I enjoy playing the piano, reading, walking in nature, collecting rocks and animals, and gardening, which helps me maintain a healthy balance between work and life.

Thesis
The Symbiosis of Auditory Symbols and Jungian Archetypes in Indigenous Shamanism
This project investigates the possibility of manifesting Jung's archetypes through sonic symbolism in primitive shamanism. Using Jung’s archetypes and the collective unconscious as a theoretical framework, it aims to situate the role of nonverbal communication and identify the specific soundscapes that alter states of consciousness and facilitate the manifestation of archetypal imagery. This project offers new insights into therapeutic practices and preserves Indigenous cultural heritage.
