Biography

Biography Jerry Coakley is Professor of Finance at Essex Business School at the University of Essex. He was the Head of the Finance group at the Department of Accounting, Finance and Management (which later became Essex Business School) 2001-2010. He founded the Essex Finance Centre (EFiC) and acted as its Director until 2014. He has published over 60 articles in peer-reviewed international finance and economics journals including the Journal of Corporate Finance, Economic Journal, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, British Accounting Review and the British Journal of Management. He has supervised to completion some 25 PhD students. His current research interests include Fintech (equity crowdfunding and ICOs), corporate finance (IPOs, London AIM) and behavioural finance (prospect theory, investor sentiment).

Fintech

Equity crowdfunding has emerged as a novel source of funding for startups via internet platforms that complements angel and venture capital financing. It is one of the few Fintech developments that is not banking or payments based. ICOs (initial coin offerings) are another such phenomenon but are quite distinct from equity crowdfunding.

Behavioural finance

Prospect theory provides new insights about investor behaviour such as a preference for lottery stocks or the tendency to gamble to cover losses. Misvaluation theory implies that the the market-to-book ratio can have a misvaluation (eg overvaluation driven by sentiment in hot markets) as well as a growth component.
